About
Jacob Wright (b. 1993) is a Texas - based flutist and pedagogue of orchestral, chamber and solo repertoire, with a particular enthusiasm for performing and premiering new works. Wright is an active and versatile artist that has performed in numerous solo and chamber recitals, as well as toured with large ensembles in order to bring his love of music to audiences all over Texas. His devotion to performance has led him to pursue many different areas of expertise and he has encompassed these traits into his unique style of playing; combing romantic gestures and phrases with more contemporary techniques and ideals.
Currently
As an educator, Wright has a private flute studio where he teaches hard working flutist of all ages. He currently teaches students in Fort Worth, TX. He works to help students achieve personal goals and prepare for competitions. His non-profit work has led him to accept the Development Specialist position with Camp Fire First Texas, an outdoor education non-profit focused on providing out-of-school time and outdoor learning programs for children and youth while also offering workforce development programs for early childhood educators. He provides development, donor management and fundraising skills to help Camp Fire First Texas meet their campaign goals.
Performance
In addition to solo repertoire, Wright has also performed in a variety of chamber music ensembles including; The Valhalla Wind Quintet, TWU Flute Choir, Trio Minerva, The TWU Graduate Flute Quartet and Abilene New Music Collective. Wright has served as principal flute in the Hardin-Simmons University Orchestra, Rockwall Philharmonic, HSU Concert Band and the Texas Woman’s University Wind Symphony. Wright has performed over 30 world premieres since 2012 in a variety of chamber groups and solo performances. His love for new music and its performance is an important factor in his playing. Wright continues to look for ways to bring his love of new music to different audiences.
In 2018, as a member of the chamber groups Trio Minerva and The Texas Woman’s University Graduate Flute Quartet, Wright had his international debut in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The groups presented individual showcase concerts and performed for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors. (NACWPI)
Education
Wright received his undergraduate degree in Music Business with emphasis in Fine Arts Administration from Hardin-Simmons University in May of 2016, studying flute with Dr. Karla Ordoñez. He then received a M.A in Flute Pedagogy at Texas Woman’s University studying with Dr. Pamela Youngblood, where he was a Graduate Assistant for Flute and Recorded Media. In this position, Wright taught undergraduate flute majors, was Assistant Director of the TWU Flute Choir, and head of the Recording Department for the TWU Music Department.
Experiences
As an administrator and festival coordinator, Wright was the Festival Co-Chair for Texas Flute Society, the largest flute festival in Texas. In this position, from 2017-2019, he organized, planned logistics and promoted the festival, which took place at Texas Woman’s University. The festival provides a safe and welcoming performance opportunities for flutists of all ages and continuing education for all.
As a promoter of interdisciplinary mediums and through his work with the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council (ACAC), Wright was able to assist with the planning and implementation of cultural and artistic events for the city of Abilene. His work with the ACAC ranged from accounting, bookkeeping, donor relations, donor management, and grant writing to creative planning with the city’s programs. In his time with the ACAC, he assisted with the management of the Broadway Series, HeARTS for the Arts, the Children Art’s and Literacy Festival (CALF), the Storybook Sculpture lighting project, and the Downtown Lighting project.
Wright was also on staff with the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts (FWAFA) as the Music Production and Operations Assistant for the choral department. In this position, he worked with the Grammy Award winning choir, Texas Boys Choir; as well as The Singing Girls of Texas and Academy Singers. In his time with the choirs, Wright worked with the choral team and provided production assistance for multiple choral performances, ran day to day operations of the department, planned tours, which included a week long tour of the Southwest with Singing Girls of Texas and Academy Singers. Wright also performed on flute with the choirs, led various sectionals, rehearsals and assisted with the creation of databases for students and alumni. In his time with FWAFA, Wright was able to incorporate the elements of beautiful singing into his unique style of playing.
In his free time, Wright likes to explore different areas of life. Finding new nature trails he has not yet seen, opening up a new book that has been on his ever increasing book list, finding an exciting podcast to listen to, playing video games with friends, and traveling to new locations! His ambition for the future is only rivaled by his various interests.
